Pompei: Below the Clouds
A documentary by renowned Italian master Gianfranco Rosi, known for such documentary works as "Fire at Sea" and "The Traveling Pope," set in the World Heritage sites of Pompeii and Naples, depicting the grand history and people's lives spread at the foot of a volcano in beautiful monochrome imagery. Pompeii, the ancient Roman city that vanished in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, was buried under volcanic ash in a single day and night, preserving the appearance of the prosperous city as it was, but the buried ruins no longer retain their original form due to long-continued excavation and looting. In the city of Naples spread at the foot of the volcano, people's lives continue beneath the hanging clouds. Maria, a woman who has worked at the archaeological museum for 30 years; a University of Tokyo team excavating ruins near Mount Vesuvius; Titti, a man who tutors children; a Syrian young man unloading Ukrainian wheat from a ship. Director Rosi spent three and a half years in Naples while running his camera, capturing the lives of people living modestly in this land, along with the 2,000-year history, present, and hope for the future of the volcano city. Daniel Blumberg of "The Brutalist" handled the music. The film won the Special Jury Prize in the competition section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in 2025.
