My Grandfather Is a Nihonjin
An animated film based on the novel 'Nihonjin' by Oscar Nakazato, which won the 'Jabuti Prize' in 2012, the most prestigious literary award in Brazil's publishing world, depicting the rich human drama of three generations of Japanese immigrants living in Brazil. Inspired by the visual world of contemporary artist Oscar Oiwa, who expresses sweeping, allegorical perspectives with meticulous detail, it was brought to the screen by the Brazilian animation studio PINGUIM CONTENT. Noboru, a 10-year-old boy who is a third-generation Japanese-Brazilian, is given a school assignment to research his cultural identity and visits his grandfather Hideo. The taciturn Hideo has avoided confronting his past, but begins to tell his life story to Noboru. In the 1920s, 20-year-old Hideo arrived in Brazil after a two-month voyage and struggled daily on an unfamiliar coffee plantation. As Noboru delves deeper into his family's history, he learns of an uncle, Haruo, whom he has never met. Ken Kaneko, a painter and first-generation Japanese immigrant from Yokohama, voices the grandfather Hideo, and Pietro Takeda, an 11-year-old with several years of voice acting experience, voices the grandson Noboru.
