「パリ、テキサス」のビム・ベンダース監督が10年ぶりに祖国ドイツでメガホンをとり、1987年・第40回カンヌ国際映画祭で監督賞を受賞した傑作ファンタジー。壁崩壊前のベルリンを舞台に、人間に恋してしまった天使の運命を、美しく詩的な映像でつづる。人間たちの心の声を聞き、彼らの苦悩に寄り添う天使ダミエルは、サーカスの空中ブランコで舞う女性マリオンに出会う。ダミエルは孤独を抱える彼女に強くひかれ、天界から人間界に降りることを決意する。ブルーノ・ガンツが主演を務め、テレビドラマ「刑事コロンボ」のピーター・フォークが本人役で出演。脚本には後にノーベル文学賞を受賞する作家ペーター・ハントケが参加した。1993年には続編「時の翼にのって　ファラウェイ・ソー・クロース！」が製作された。

A masterpiece fantasy film directed by Wim Wenders ('Paris, Texas'), who took the helm in his home country of Germany for the first time in a decade, winning the Best Director award at the 40th Cannes Film Festival in 1987. Set in Berlin before the fall of the Wall, it poetically and beautifully depicts the fate of an angel who falls in love with a human. Damiel, an angel who listens to the inner voices of humans and comforts their sorrows, meets Marion, a trapeze artist performing in a circus. Strongly drawn to her loneliness, Damiel decides to descend from the heavenly realm to the human world. Bruno Ganz stars, and Peter Falk ('Columbo') appears as himself. The screenplay was contributed by Peter Handke, who would later win the Nobel Prize in Literature. A sequel, 'Faraway, So Close!,' was produced in 1993.
