「妖獣都市」「バンパイアハンターD」の川尻善昭監督による時代劇アニメ。江戸時代前期。望月藩お抱えの甲賀組の忍びたちは、下田村に蔓延する謎の疫病を調査するため村に潜入するが、謎の忍び軍団・鬼門八人衆に襲撃され、ほぼ全滅してしまう。ただひとり生き残ったくノ一・陽炎は、主を持たない「はぐれ忍び」の牙神獣兵衛に偶然助けられる。自身も鬼門八人衆から命を狙われる身となった獣兵衛は、鬼門八人衆を追う公儀隠密・濁庵や陽炎と行動をともにすることに。次々と襲い来る刺客たちと壮絶な戦いを繰り広げる中、獣兵衛は自身の過去の因縁と向き合っていく。アメリカでは「Ninja Scroll」のタイトルでビデオ発売され人気を集めた。2003年には続編となるテレビアニメ「獣兵衛忍風帖　龍宝玉篇」が制作された。

A period anime directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, known for "Wicked City" and "Vampire Hunter D." In the early Edo period. Ninja of the Koga clan serving the Mochizuki domain infiltrate a village to investigate a mysterious plague spreading through Shimoda Village, but are attacked by a mysterious ninja army, the Kimon Eight, and nearly wiped out. Kagero, the sole surviving kunoichi, is rescued by chance by Jubei Kibagami, a masterless wandering ninja. Jubei, now himself targeted by the Kimon Eight, joins forces with Kagero and Dokuan, a shogunate spy pursuing the Kimon Eight. Amid fierce battles against wave after wave of assassins, Jubei confronts the entanglements of his own past. Released on video in the US under the title "Ninja Scroll," it gained great popularity. In 2003, a sequel TV anime, "Ninja Scroll: The Series," was produced.
