A documentary that delves into the unknown face of film director Yasujiro Ozu and the origins of his masterpieces. Yasujiro Ozu directed numerous masterpieces such as "Tokyo Story" and "An Autumn Afternoon," exerting a tremendous influence not only on Japanese cinema but on the film industry worldwide. His stories, which appear simple at first glance yet are meticulously calculated, and his unique visual style were expressive methods for exploring themes of family, love, and the sense of impermanence from a poetic and deeply human perspective. His works, while deeply rooted in Japanese culture, continue to resonate in the hearts of people around the world and demonstrate the possibilities of film as an art form. In this film, Ozu's own words serve as a guide, incorporating precious archival materials including diaries, notebooks, letters, photographs, interviews, and home movies. Furthermore, through reflections by film directors such as Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Wim Wenders, Luc Dardenne, and Tsai Ming-liang, as well as recollections by actors Kyoko Kagawa and Isao Shizawa, producer Shizuo Yamanouchi, and other filmmakers who shared Ozu's era, the film unravels how Ozu sublimated personal loss and the trauma of war into timeless masterpieces. The director is Daniel Raim, known for documentary works such as "Harold and Lillian: A Hollywood Love Story." A 2025 screening selection for the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival's "Japanese Cinema Classics" section.
