Monk in Pieces
A documentary exploring the creative life of 83-year-old legendary New York-based artist Meredith Monk. Living in a TriBeCa loft with a turtle, the woman with trademark braids, Meredith Monk, was born on November 20, 1942, and raised in New York. She has worked as a composer, singer, director, choreographer, and performance artist creating various music-theatre works, films, and installations, influencing many musicians. A pioneer of contemporary artistic expression, she treats her voice—spanning over three octaves—as an instrument, continuously pursuing original, genre-transcending expression. The film weaves together extensive archival footage of Monk's stage and performance works with interviews from admirers like Björk and David Byrne, connecting fragments of her 60-year career like a concept album to depict her unique expression and life. It highlights her strong, resilient, and charming persona, having started her career in the male-dominated 1960s and continued her own path despite occasional critical scorn.
