「告白」「渇き。」の中島哲也が、「来る」以来8年ぶりに手がけた監督作。打海文三の小説「時には懺悔を」を原作に、家族から目を背けた男、娘に捨てられた女、子を生きる糧にした男、産んだ子を愛せない女など、それぞれ過去に傷を抱えた大人たちが、いまを懸命に生きるひとつの小さな命との出会いを通して再生していく姿を描く。 探偵の佐竹と助手の聡子は、ある殺人事件の真相を探るうち、9年前の誘拐事件で連れ去られた、「新」という子どもの存在にたどり着く。重い障がいがありながらも数奇な運命を生きのびてきた新。いまを必死に生きるひとつの小さな命によって、傷ついた大人たちが再び生きる力を取り戻していく。 中島監督と初のタッグとなる西島秀俊が、家族との不和を抱えながら生きる男・佐竹役で主演を務めた。そのほか、西島と初共演となる満島ひかりをはじめ、黒木華、宮藤官九郎、柴咲コウ、塚本晋也、片岡鶴太郎、佐藤二朗、役所広司ら日本の映画界を支える実力派キャストが集結した。

Nakashima Tetsuya of "Confessions" and "The World of Kanako" directs his first film in eight years since "Coming." Based on Uchiumi Bunsan's novel "Toki ni wa Zange o," it depicts adults scarred by their pasts—a man who turned away from his family, a woman abandoned by her daughter, a man who lived for his child, a woman who couldn't love the child she bore—struggling to live in the present and finding regeneration through an encounter with one small life. Detective Satake and his assistant Satoko, while investigating the truth behind a murder case, come across the existence of a child named "Arata," who was taken in a kidnapping case nine years ago. Despite severe disabilities, Arata has survived a bizarre fate. Through this one small life desperately living in the present, wounded adults regain the strength to live. Nakashima's first collaboration, Nishijima Hidetoshi, stars as Satake, a man living with discord within his family. Alongside him, a formidable cast supporting the Japanese film industry gathers, including first-time co-star with Nishijima, Mitsushima Hikari, as well as Kuroki Haru, Kudō Kankurō, Shibasaki Kō, Tsukamoto Shinya, Kataoka Tsurutarō, Satō Jirō, and Yakusho Kōji.
