Mr. Nobody Against Putin
A documentary exposing the full scope of the patriotic education being carried out in Russia since the invasion of Ukraine. In Karabash, a small rural town at the foot of Russia's Ural Mountains, Pavel Tarankin, a schoolteacher in charge of planning and filming events at the elementary school, led a peaceful life capturing the children's everyday moments and growth on his video camera. A lover of freedom and democracy, he was genuinely proud of his profession. But in February 2022, when Russia's invasion of Ukraine began, their daily lives were transformed. President Putin issued a decree introducing "patriotic education" that teaches children in schools to glorify and take part in war, raising them as "future soldiers." The once gentle atmosphere of the school was instantly repainted with the tense air of wartime. Under absolute orders in which anyone who defies is seen as an enemy of the state, teachers struggle with their consciences, children become steeped in wartime education, and graduates are sent off to the front one after another. Tarankin's camera records it all. American documentary filmmaker David Borenstein, based in Denmark, co-directs with Pavel Tarankin, vividly capturing from the perspective of those involved the reality of propaganda as a state incites its citizens and drives them toward war. It won the Best Documentary Feature award at the 98th Academy Awards in 2026.
