フィンランドの名匠アキ・カウリスマキによる“敗者3部作”の最終章となる人間ドラマ。ヘルシンキの街の片隅で生きる孤独な男が、人を愛することによって人間性を回復していくさまを描き出す。恋人も友人もいない夜警員コイスティネンは、カフェで声を掛けてきた美しい女ミルヤに恋をする。しかし彼女はマフィアが送り込んだ情婦だった。強盗の罪を擦りつけられたコイスティネンは逮捕され、1年間の服役を言い渡されてしまう。

Night watchman Koistinen, who has neither a lover nor friends, falls in love with a beautiful woman named Mirja who approaches him at a café. However, she is a mistress sent by the mafia. Koistinen is framed for robbery, arrested, and sentenced to one year in prison.
