From director Richard Linklater, known for the 'Before' trilogy beginning with 'Before Sunrise' and the six-time Oscar-nominated 'Boyhood,' this conversation piece stars his longtime collaborator Ethan Hawke and depicts a night spent at a party attended by legendary Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart. On the evening of March 31, 1943, the night of the premiere of the musical 'Oklahoma!,' created by his longtime composing partner Richard Rodgers with a new collaborator, Lorenz Hart—the lyricist behind hits like 'The Lady Is a Tramp' and 'My Funny Valentine'—was invited to a party at the Broadway restaurant Sardi's. Over the course of that night, Hart confronts his own swirling emotions of love, jealousy, anxiety, and longing. Ethan Hawke plays Lorenz Hart, alongside Margaret Qualley as Elizabeth, the woman Hart pines for; Andrew Scott as his former partner Richard Rodgers; and Bobby Cannavale as Eddie, the bartender Hart trusts as a confidant. The film was screened in the competition section of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival in 2025, where Andrew Scott won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Actor. It was nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor (Ethan Hawke) at the 98th Academy Awards.
