2002年に発表したフルデジタルの個人制作アニメーション「ほしのこえ」で一躍脚光を浴びた新海誠が、初めて挑戦した長編監督作。津軽海峡を挟んで南北に分断された戦後の日本を舞台に、世界の謎を背負った1人の少女を救うため葛藤する少年たちの姿を描いた。米軍統治下の日本。青森に暮らす中学生の藤沢浩紀と白川拓也は、海峡を挟んだ北海道に立つ巨大な塔に憧れ、いつかその塔を目指そうと廃駅跡でひそかに飛行機の組み立てにいそしんでいた。ある夏休み、2人はもうひとつの憧れの存在・同級生の沢渡佐由理に飛行機の秘密を打ち明ける。3人は一緒に塔を目指す夢を共有し、ひと時の幸せな時間を過ごすが、中学3年の夏、佐由理は理由を告げることなく転校してしまう。飛行機で塔を目指す夢もそのまま立ち消えとなり、3年の時が過ぎる。それぞれの道を歩んでいた浩紀と拓也だったが、世界情勢に暗雲が漂い、塔の秘密が次第に明らかになったことをきっかけに、2人は再会する。声の出演に俳優の吉岡秀隆、萩原聖人。

Makoto Shinkai, who rose to prominence with his fully digital personal animation "Voices of a Distant Star" in 2002, makes his feature-length directorial debut. Set in post-war Japan divided north and south by the Tsugaru Strait, it depicts boys struggling to save a girl burdened with the world's mysteries. In Japan under US military rule, middle school students Hiroki Fujisawa and Takuya Shirakawa in Aomori admire a giant tower standing across the strait in Hokkaido, and secretly work on assembling an airplane at an abandoned station site, dreaming of one day reaching that tower. One summer vacation, they confide their airplane secret to their classmate Sayuri Sawatari, another object of their admiration. The three share the dream of reaching the tower together, enjoying a brief period of happiness, but in the summer of their third year of middle school, Sayuri transfers away without explanation. The dream of reaching the tower by plane fades, and three years pass. Hiroki and Takuya, having gone their separate ways, reunite when dark clouds gather over the world situation and the tower's secrets gradually come to light. Voice cast includes actors Hidetaka Yoshioka and Masato Hagiwara.
