現代の時代劇撮影所にタイムスリップした幕末の侍が時代劇の斬られ役として奮闘する姿を描いた時代劇コメディ。 幕末の京都。会津藩士の高坂新左衛門は家老から長州藩士を討つよう密命を受けるが、標的の男と刃を交えた瞬間、落雷によって気を失ってしまう。目を覚ますと、そこは現代の時代劇撮影所だった。新左衛門は行く先々で騒動を起こしながら、江戸幕府が140年前に滅んだことを知り、がく然とする。一度は死を覚悟する新左衛門だったが、心優しい人たちに助けられ、生きる気力を取り戻していく。やがて彼は磨き上げた剣の腕だけを頼りに撮影所の門を叩き、斬られ役として生きていくことを決意する。 テレビドラマ「剣客商売」シリーズなど数々の時代劇に出演してきた山口馬木也が主演を務め、冨家ノリマサ、沙倉ゆうのが共演。「ごはん」「拳銃と目玉焼」の安田淳一が監督・脚本を手がけ、自主制作作品でありながら東映京都撮影所の特別協力によって完成させた。 2024年8月17日に池袋シネマ・ロサの一館のみで封切られ（8月30日からは川崎チネチッタでシーンを追加した「デラックス版」が上映スタート）、口コミで話題が広まったことから同年9月13日からはギャガが共同配給につき、新宿ピカデリー、TOHOシネマズ日比谷ほか全国100館以上で順次拡大公開。インディペンデント映画として異例の大ヒットを記録したうえ、第48回日本アカデミー賞では最優秀作品賞を受賞する快挙となった。

A period comedy depicting a late-Edo period samurai who time-travels to a modern-day period drama studio and struggles as a sword-falling extra. In Kyoto at the end of the Edo period, Kosaka Shinzaemon, a retainer of the Aizu domain, receives a secret order from the chief retainer to kill a Choshu domain samurai, but at the moment his blade meets his target's, he is struck by lightning and loses consciousness. When he wakes up, he finds himself in a modern period drama studio. Shinzaemon causes commotions wherever he goes, and is stunned to learn that the Tokugawa shogunate fell 140 years ago. Resigned to death at first, he is helped by kind-hearted people and regains his will to live. Eventually, relying only on his polished swordsmanship, he knocks on the studio's door and decides to live as a sword-falling extra. Starring Makiya Yamaguchi, who has appeared in numerous period dramas including the TV series "Kenkaku Shobai," with Norimasa Tomiya and Yuno Sakura co-starring. Directed and written by Junichi Yasuda ("Gohan," "Kenju to Medamayaki"), it was completed with special cooperation from Toei Kyoto Studio despite being an independent production. Released exclusively at Ikebukuro Cinema Rosa on August 17, 2024 (a "Deluxe Version" with added scenes began screening at Kawasaki Cinecitta from August 30), word of mouth spread, and from September 13 of the same year, with Gaga as co-distributor, it expanded to over 100 theaters nationwide including Shinjuku Piccadilly and Toho Cinemas Hibiya. It became an unprecedented hit for an independent film and achieved the feat of winning the Best Picture award at the 48th Japan Academy Film Prize.
