1945年、第二次世界大戦末期のドイツ北部・アムルム島は、本土へ向かう爆撃機が上空を飛行しながらも、どこか楽園のような静寂を保っていた。疎開してきた12歳の少年・ナニングは、戦地から戻らぬ父に代わり、農作業を手伝い妊娠中の母ら家族を支えている。しかし、ヒトラーに心酔する母・ヒレが彼の訃報を受けて心身ともに崩壊してしまうと、ナニングの日常も一変していく。生気を失い、食事を拒むヒレが唯一欲したのは、たっぷりのバターとはちみつが塗られた白パンだったー

In 1945, at the end of World War II, the island of Amrum in northern Germany remained in a strange, paradise-like stillness even as bombers flew overhead toward the mainland. Naning, a 12-year-old boy evacuated there, supports his pregnant mother and family by helping with farm work in place of his father, who has not returned from the front. However, when his mother Hille, who is devoted to Hitler, collapses both mentally and physically upon receiving news of his death, Naning's daily life is transformed. Hille, drained of vitality and refusing food, desires only one thing: white bread generously spread with butter and honey.
