川島雄三監督が1957年に発表した名作喜劇。幕末の文久2年、品川の遊郭で飲めや歌えやの大騒ぎを繰り広げた佐平次は、一文の金も持ち合わせておらず、遊んだ分を居残りで働くことに。しかし、お調子者の佐平次は自らの困難をものともせず、遊郭に立ち寄った高杉晋作らとも交友し、巻き起こる騒動を次々と片付けていく。物語のベースは古典落語の「居残り佐平次」。脚本を手がけた今村昌平が助監督を務めている。2012年、日活創立100周年記念事業の一環として最新のデジタル技術を駆使して映像修復した「デジタル修復版」が公開された。
