Soylent Green
Directed by Richard Fleischer of "Fantastic Voyage" fame, this 1973 near-future sci-fi film adapts Harry Harrison's novel "Make Room! Make Room!" and depicts various social issues such as overpopulation, extreme weather, food shortages, resource depletion, ecological collapse, and poverty. In 2022, New York City is suffering from explosive population growth, leaving people homeless and food shortages commonplace, while rapid climate change has subjected the city to heat waves. In a world of extreme inequality, most people spend their days idly waiting for the weekly government ration of the nutrient food "Soylent." Amidst this, a murder occurs: Simonsohn, an executive of the Soylent Corporation who just announced the new product "Soylent Green" as the ultimate nutrition, is killed. Homicide detective Thorn takes on the investigation... Charlton Heston of "Ben-Hur" stars as Detective Thorn, with Edward G. Robinson of "Little Caesar" co-starring. A digitally remastered version was revived in theaters in May 2024.
