What Should We Have Done?

Documentary filmmaker Tomoaki Fujino records over 20 years the story of his older sister, who began showing symptoms of schizophrenia, and his parents, who kept her from seeing a psychiatrist. His sister, eight years older, was caring and excellent. Influenced by their parents, she entered medical school to become a doctor. One day, she suddenly started screaming things that weren't true. Schizophrenia was suspected, but her parents—a doctor and a researcher—refused to acknowledge the illness and kept her away from psychiatric care. Doubting their judgment, Fujino tried to persuade them but failed, and left home with a lingering sense of unease. Eighteen years after his sister's onset, Fujino, having studied filmmaking, began recording his family's life whenever he visited home. He filmed family outings and dinner scenes, engaged his parents in conversation, and kept talking to his sister, but her condition worsened. Eventually, his parents installed a chain and padlock on the front door to confine her inside.
