香港の離島・長洲にある小さな食堂を舞台に、そこに集う島民たちの姿を通して変わりゆく世界を見つめたドキュメンタリー。 香港島から船で南西に30分ほどの場所に位置する小さな島・長洲。漁村としても知られるこの島の港には色とりどりの船が浮かび、穏やかな時間が流れる。そんな島にある小さな食堂「日泰食堂」は、島民たちでいつも賑わっている。島の人々はこの店に集まっては、ビールを片手にトランプやマージャンに興じる。しかし、社会の変化や市民の熱気は香港から離れた島にも伝わり、食堂の常連客たちも無関心ではいられない。テレビを見つめる店主、懸命に情報を追う若者たちなど、それぞれの立場や距離感で、時代のうねりを受け止めていく。やがて世界中を覆ったパンデミックは、この食堂にも大きな影響を及ぼす。 監督は、本作が初の長編ドキュメンタリー作品となるフランキー・シン。長洲出身で自身も日泰食堂に通い詰めていたシン監督が、家族のように接していた人たちが時代の変化とどのように向き合い、日々の営みを重ねてきたのかを丁寧に映し出す。2024年・第29回釜山国際映画祭にて最優秀ドキュメンタリー賞を受賞。

Set in a small diner on Cheung Chau, an outlying island of Hong Kong, this documentary observes a changing world through the islanders who gather there. Located about 30 minutes southwest of Hong Kong Island by ferry, Cheung Chau is a small island known as a fishing village, where colorful boats bob in the harbor and time flows gently. The 'Yat Tai' diner on the island is always bustling with locals who gather to play cards and mahjong with a beer in hand. However, societal changes and the fervor of citizens reach this island far from Hong Kong, and the diner's regulars cannot remain indifferent. From the owner staring at the TV to young people eagerly seeking information, each person grapples with the tides of the era from their own perspective and distance. Eventually, the pandemic that engulfs the world also has a major impact on this diner. The director is Frankie Shin, for whom this is his first feature-length documentary. Shin, a native of Cheung Chau who was also a regular at the Yat Tai diner, carefully captures how the people he treated like family faced the changing times and continued their daily lives. The film won the Best Documentary Award at the 29th Busan International Film Festival in 2024.
