Four Trails
The Hong Kong Four Trails Ultra Challenge, commonly known as HK4TUC, requires runners to consecutively complete four trail courses in Hong Kong and reach the finish line within a time limit of 72 hours (3 days). The total course length is 298 km, comparable to the distance between Tokyo and Nagoya, with a cumulative elevation gain of 14,500 m, equivalent to seven full marathons or two ascents of Mount Everest. Furthermore, participants must procure their own water and food from shops along the way, and strict rules prohibit the use of poles or portable music players, which would be advantageous on the undulating mountain paths. It is an event of extreme physical and mental challenge. This film captures 18 runners who took on the HK4TUC pushing their limits, set against the beautiful natural landscapes of Hong Kong, rarely seen before. The director is Robin Lee, a British director born and raised in Hong Kong. The film began a limited release in Hong Kong at the end of 2024, but word-of-mouth spread rapidly and the number of screens increased sharply. It gained further attention when the major star Chow Yun-fat, known for the 'A Better Tomorrow' series and 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', highly praised it, saying 'every Hong Kong person should watch it'. Supported not only by sports enthusiasts but also by general film fans, it became the biggest surprise hit of 2025, attracting 150,000 viewers. Additionally, it has won numerous awards, including the Best New Director Award at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards, the Audience Award at the 22nd Hong Kong Asian Film Festival, the Recommended Film Award at the 31st Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards, and the Jury Special Award at the 2025 Hong Kong Directors' Guild Awards, earning high praise as a documentary.
