The Day Iceland Stood Still
The untold story of the fateful day that marked the beginning for Iceland, a global leader in gender equality. On October 24, 1975, 90% of all Icelandic women simultaneously walked away from their jobs and housework in an unprecedented movement known as "Women's Day Off." The nation was paralyzed, proving that society cannot function without women. Since then, Iceland has become the world’s most gender-equal nation—ranking first in the World Economic Forum’s Gender Gap Index for 16 consecutive years as of 2025 (with Japan at 118th)—and is currently governed by both a female president and a female prime minister. To commemorate its 50th anniversary, this documentary looks back at that fateful day that sent shockwaves around the world.
