Black Ox
A visual poem co-produced by Japan, Taiwan, and the United States, inspired by the "Ten Ox Herding Pictures," which depict the path to enlightenment in Zen using ten images of oxen. Directed and written by Tetsuichiro Tsuta, who gained domestic and international attention for "The Ravine of Goodbye," the film took eight years to complete. A hunter, forced to wander as he loses his mountain home in a rapidly changing era, encounters a majestic black ox in the mountains. He forcibly brings the resisting ox back and begins living with it in a remote house. The man and the ox till the land to survive, but they cannot see eye to eye in the face of nature's fury. However, an encounter with a Zen monk gradually brings the man and the ox to understand each other. Taiwanese acclaimed actor Lee Kang-sheng, known for his frequent roles in Tsai Ming-liang's films like "Stray Dogs," stars, with dancer Min Tanaka, also active as an actor, co-starring as the Zen monk. The entire film was shot on film, with some portions using 70mm film, a first for a Japanese feature film. The music uses compositions by Ryuichi Sakamoto, who had expressed his intention to participate in the project before his death. After its premiere at the "Asian Future" section of the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival in 2024, it won the top prize, the Firebird Award, at the 49th Hong Kong International Film Festival in 2025.
