Set in 18th-century South America, this British-French historical drama depicts human conscience and faith through the lives of a Jesuit missionary and a slave trader, and won the Palme d'Or at the 39th Cannes Film Festival in 1986. In 18th-century South America, Jesuit missionary Father Gabriel connects with the indigenous Guaraní people through music and builds a peaceful community. Meanwhile, slave trader Rodrigo Mendoza, after a certain tragedy, begins a path of atonement for his sins. However, changes in colonial policy put the mission's survival at risk, and the convictions of the two men are profoundly shaken. One takes up arms, the other persists in prayer. Their respective choices eventually lead to a tragic fate. Father Gabriel is played by Jeremy Irons and Mendoza by Robert De Niro, with Aidan Quinn and Liam Neeson in supporting roles. The director is Roland Joffé, known for The Killing Fields and City of Joy, and the screenplay is by Robert Bolt of Doctor Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia. Chris Menges' cinematography won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography at the 59th Academy Awards. Ennio Morricone's music, including 'Gabriel's Oboe,' is beloved as a masterpiece of film music history. In 2026, a 4K digital remastered version will be re-released to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its release.
