"Hey, want to run away with me?" Kirie Goshima is bewildered by the sudden confession from her childhood boyfriend, Shuichi Saito. Lately, Shuichi has been acting listless, as if terrified of something, and Kirie has been worried about him. Eventually, triggered by the incident of a student at Kirie's high school jumping to death from a spiral staircase, Shuichi utters something horrifying. He claims that their town, Kurozu-cho, is possessed by an unknown force of "spirals." Afterward, when Shuichi's father, Toshio, dies a mysterious death, ominous and bizarre spiral phenomena begin to occur one after another around the two of them.
