An epic saga depicting the tumultuous lives of two Peking opera actors, this was the first Chinese-language film to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. It portrays the love, hatred, and lives of two Peking opera performers who play the classic 'Farewell My Concubine,' set against the backdrop of China's turbulent history from 1925 under the Nationalist government through the Cultural Revolution and into the late 1970s. Directed by Chen Kaige, who gained attention with his debut 'Yellow Earth' and became a leading figure of China's Fifth Generation directors with this film's success. In 1925 Beijing, Douzi, abandoned by his prostitute mother, is sent to a Peking opera training school. Shitou protects him like a younger brother and becomes his strong support through harsh training. As they grow up, they become major stars in the Peking opera world... Leslie Cheung plays Cheng Dieyi, a male dan actor who clings to love despite being tossed by the times, and Gong Li appears as a high-class courtesan who becomes his love rival. A 4K version was released in 2023, marking the 30th anniversary of the film's production and 20 years after Leslie Cheung's death.
