Summoned by Toei's top brass seeking a weighty drama, screenwriter Sumie Tanaka was brought on board. The story follows aristocratic siblings reduced to slavery, overcoming their suffering through social advancement. Animators strongly objected to the narrative's obliviousness to societal power structures, yet the breathtakingly beautiful Yamato-e style visuals, where backgrounds and characters harmonize perfectly, captivate the viewer.
