インターネット発の都市伝説「バックルームズ」をモチーフに、ある日突然“現実世界の裏側”へ迷い込んでしまった男の恐怖を描き、世界各地で社会現象を巻き起こした不条理スリラー。16歳の時に発表したYouTube短編動画「The Backrooms （Found Footage）」で注目を集めた映像クリエイターのケイン・パーソンズが、同短編をもとに映画化を企画、19歳で撮影を行い、全米・世界興収ランキングでそれぞれ公開初週1位の映画を生んだ史上最年少の監督となった。 家具店の店主クラークは、店内に“あるはずのない隙間”を発見する。その先には壁の裏側へと抜け落ちるように続く、全面が黄色い壁紙の異様な空間が広がっていた。奇妙なバランスで積み上げられた無数の家具に、果てしなく続く迷路のような黄色い部屋。どこからともなく断片的なアナウンスが聞こえてくるが、呼びかけても応答はない。クラークはセラピストのメアリーにこの異様な空間について説明したものの信じてもらえず、その存在を証明するべく、記録用のビデオカメラを手に再び足を踏み入れるが……。 「それでも夜は明ける」のキウェテル・イジョフォーが主演を務め、「センチメンタル・バリュー」のレナーテ・レインスベ、「スキャンダル」のマーク・デュプラス、ドラマ「ナイト・オブ・ザ・セブン・キングダムズ」のフィン・ベネットが共演。110分の本編終了後に16分のスペシャル映像を追加した「Everything Must Go Edition」も制作され、日本では同バージョンにて劇場公開。

An absurdist thriller inspired by the internet-born urban legend 'The Backrooms,' depicting the terror of a man who one day stumbles into the 'backside of the real world,' sparking a global social phenomenon. Kane Parsons, the video creator who gained attention at 16 for his YouTube short 'The Backrooms (Found Footage),' planned this film adaptation based on that short, shot it at 19, and became the youngest director ever to have a film debut at #1 at the US and worldwide box office. Clarke, the owner of a furniture store, discovers a 'gap that shouldn't exist' in his shop. Beyond it lies a bizarre space covered entirely in yellow wallpaper, as if falling through to the other side of the wall. Countless pieces of furniture stacked in strange balance, endless maze-like yellow rooms. Fragmentary announcements can be heard from somewhere, but there is no response to calls. Clarke explains this strange space to his therapist, Mary, but she doesn't believe him. To prove its existence, he ventures back in with a video camera to record, but... Chiwetel Ejiofor ('12 Years a Slave') stars, with Renate Reinsve ('The Worst Person in the World'), Mark Duplass ('Bombshell'), and Finn Bennett ('Game of Thrones' spinoff 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms') co-starring. An 'Everything Must Go Edition' with 16 minutes of special footage added after the 110-minute main feature was also produced and released theatrically in Japan.
