Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer

The extremely cold-blooded 1986 American film "Henry" is set for release nationwide starting Friday, August 28th, at Cinema Shinjuku and other theaters. This film was shelved in the US for several years after completion due to its content, finally being officially released in 1990, and theatrically released in Japan in 1992. A crime thriller that depicts the daily life of serial killer Henry Lee Lucas, believed to have murdered over 300 people across the US from the late 70s to the 80s, with a flat, freezing coldness. Despite having almost no gore or graphic violence, the film's atmosphere and its thoroughly documentary-style depiction have made it one of the most terrifying films in cinema history. At the time of its completion in 1986, the financing company, which had expected a fun horror film like "Friday the 13th," was stunned by the cold, emotionless content of "Henry." Furthermore, the X rating from the MPAA delayed its official theatrical release for several years. In recent years, it has had limited theatrical screenings in Japan, but this marks its full-fledged official revival screening. Additionally, it has been decided that "Evilenko" (2003), featuring Malcolm McDowell (of "A Clockwork Orange") as Andrei Chikatilo, the most prolific serial killer of the Soviet era who murdered over 50 people, and "Angst" (1983) 4K, with Erwin Leder as Werner Kniesek, the Austrian perpetrator of a impulsive family massacre, will be screened consecutively this autumn at Cinema Shinjuku. "Evilenko" has never had a packaged release or streaming, making this its complete first arrival and Japanese theatrical premiere. "Angst" 4K is the 4K restoration of the film that achieved an unusual and extraordinary hit upon its Japanese theatrical premiere in 2020. The teaser posters for these three films have also been completed. Since all are based on real events, the tagline "This is what he did." is included. Iconic and important scenes from "Henry," "Evilenko," and "Angst" 4K have been selected, where the absence of people further emphasizes the unsettling nature of the scenes: a blood-stained suitcase discarded in a grassy field, an imposing open-reel tape recorder in an interrogation room, a ball rolling in a blood-stained tunnel. The designs evoke a sense of what happened here, what they did, anticipating an unstoppable, predetermined cruel fate. HENRY STORY: Having killed his abusive mother at age 14, Henry begins a strange cohabitation with his partner Otis and Otis's sister Becky. But Henry gradually finds it harder to suppress his almost instinctive urge to kill. And when Otis sees Becky drawn to Henry and making advances, jealousy turns their shared life into a tragedy.
