1972年、中国から2頭のパンダが贈呈され、日本は空前のパンダブームに湧いた。その渦中で公開された本作は、クマの国の王子であるパンダのロンロンが、王となるべく数々の試練に挑む成長譚である。作画監督は、東映魔女っ子シリーズで多くのキャラクターデザインを手がけた高橋信也。森康二が参加した最後の東映動画作品でもある。

In 1972, two pandas were gifted from China, and Japan was swept by an unprecedented panda boom. Released amid that frenzy, this film is a coming-of-age tale of Ron Ron, a panda prince of the Bear Kingdom, who faces numerous trials to become king. The animation director was Nobuya Takahashi, who designed many characters in the Toei Magical Girl series. It is also the last Toei Animation film in which Koji Mori participated.
