「ブルーベルベット」「ワイルド・アット・ハート」の鬼才デビッド・リンチが、ハリウッドを舞台に2人の女が織りなす物語を悪夢のように不条理な展開で描いたミステリードラマ。ロサンゼルス北部の山を横断する曲がりくねった道路“マルホランド・ドライブ”。ある夜、車の衝突事故が起こり、唯一の生存者である女は傷を負ったままハリウッドの街にたどり着く。高級アパートの一室に身を隠した彼女は、そこで女優志望のベティと遭遇。女はとっさに“リタ”と名乗り、事故に遭って記憶を失っていることをベティに打ち明ける。リタのバッグには大金と青い鍵が入っており、思い出せるのは“マルホランド・ドライブ”という言葉だけ。ベティはリタの記憶を取り戻す手伝いをしようと決意するが……。主演は「21グラム」のナオミ・ワッツと「パニッシャー」のローラ・ハリング。2001年・第54回カンヌ国際映画祭で監督賞を受賞した。

One midnight, a car crash occurs on Mulholland Drive. The sole survivor, a dark-haired woman, manages to make her way to the streets of Hollywood and slips into an empty residence. It turns out to be the home of famous actress Ruth, where she is soon discovered by Ruth’s niece, Betty. Betty initially assumes the woman—who impulsively calls herself Rita—is a friend of her aunt, but she soon realizes they are total strangers. Rita confesses that she can remember nothing. The only clues are a large sum of cash and a mysterious blue key found in her bag. Out of both sympathy and curiosity, Betty offers to help Rita recover her memories, but...
