Willaq Pirqa, the Cinema of My Village

Set in a small village nestled within the majestic Andes Mountains of Peru, this drama follows the coming-of-age of a young boy captivated by the magic of cinema. Sistu, an inquisitive boy living in the highlands, happens upon a movie advertisement carried by the wind on the first day of the new school term. Guided by the flyer, he finds his way to a mobile cinema, where he experiences film for the first time and is instantly enchanted by its storytelling. From that day forward, Sistu becomes the village’s weekly storyteller, recounting the films he has seen to the local residents. However, when the mobile cinema suddenly vanishes into thin air, events begin to take an unexpected turn. Directed by Cesar Galindo in his second feature film, the story weaves complex themes—the realities of the Peruvian education system, the marginalization of Andean highland communities, discrimination within a multicultural society, and the lingering scars of civil war—into a heartwarming narrative. Featuring a cast largely comprised of non-professional actors, including breakout lead Victor Acurio as Sistu, the film is spoken in Quechua, one of Peru’s official languages. It went on to become the highest-grossing Quechua-language film in the history of Peruvian cinema.
